Shiny Bits In Between
Thanks so much for agreeing to an author interview.

Could you start by telling me about your book?
Shiny Bits In Between is a novel about two women learning to live again. They’ve both disconnected from their lives and perhaps more importantly, from themselves. Dorie by pushing away everyone who cares about her, and Clementine by losing her grip on reality. Fate brings them both to Bolivar Peninsula, a remote community on the Texas Gulf Coast, where they begin a journey of re-awaking.
Which genre do you prefer to write? / What made attracted you to that genre?
I read a lot of women’s fiction and literary fiction. I love stories of transformation and authors who celebrate the beauty of language.
If you were asked to recommend three books written by authors other than yourself, which books would you recommend and why?
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, Shipping News by Annie Proulx, Spill, Simmer, Falter, Wither by Sara Baume.
All three of these books are wonderful stories about regular people making their way through this crazy world of ours. And all three authors use language inventively and exquisitely.

When did you start writing? What motivated you to write?
I’ve always written. I have two younger brothers, and I used to tell them bedtime stories, which they loved. English was always my favorite class in school, especially when we got to write stories. As a teenager, I wrote lots of pretty bad poetry. It’s not until I started taking writing workshops that I began to realize I wanted to share my work. I didn’t pursue publishing until I was 55.

Who is your favourite character in your novels? / What do you like about them?
Clementine was the most fun to write. She’s hovering between sanity and madness, so that gave me a lot of freedom to give her an interesting voice and unique point of view.

When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
I read A LOT! I also enjoy listening to my husband play guitar, watching scary movies with my son (or English/Nordic detective shows). And I am a fiber artist, so I’m usually playing around with fabrics and various animal fluff!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
My dream is to spend part of the year here in Texas where I have a wonderful community of friends and family. Then I’d spend May through October in England where I grew up and still have many people very dear to me. I adore cold gray days, and the one thing I don’t enjoy about Texas is the heat and humidity—it’s just not in my English blood I suppose
